Slash-Dance-1989

Plot:

In Hollywood, a female cop goes undercover as a dancer at an old theatre to catch a serial killer who has been murdering women auditioning for a musical…

Reviews [click links to read more]:

“There are a lot of red herrings tossed around, along with a lot of big hair, acid-washed denim, horrible acting and downright retarded storytelling. This movie also tries to inject a lot of really unfunny, inappropriate humor throughout, which gives it a schizophrenic feel as it switches back and forth from wacky high jinks to musical montages to serious violence, all without batting an eyelash.” CHUD.com

Screen Shot 2014-12-11 at 21.34.20

Slashdance is an utterly avoidable effort that fails to deliver as a slasher, as a comedy or even as a dance movie. There’s really nothing to recommend here and its best avoided.” A Slash Above…

Slash Dance dancers 1989

Slash Dance is very bad, and I don’t really think it’s even much of a curiosity for slasher fans unless you really want to see shoot guns on a firing range, deliver dropkicks, and show off her high-heel throwing prowess. No matter how cool that sounds, it really isn’t. Trash it!” Oh, the Horror!

Slash Dance geek 1989

“The intentional humor is so not funny that it totally travels full-circle and becomes funny again, which is very rare … Look, if you want a decent slasher set in the world of theatre, try Stage Fright or Curtains. But if you just want some fabulously bad direct-to-VHS ’80s-cheesy-style fun, I highly recommend Slash Dance, some friends, and a six-pack.” Final Girl

Missing in Greenwood is a 2018 Irish found-footage horror feature film about a father searching for his son in an isolated forest.

Written and directed by Stephen Patrick Kenny (24 Hours to Die; The Pigman Murders), the Hook Up Films production stars James Fahey, Bernie Coen, Michael Corcoran and Tony Denham.

Plot:

A worried father (Tony Denham) goes to the isolated forest of Greenwood in hope of finding his son Pat Cullen (Mark Hutchinson) who has been missing for over two years. As he makes his way to the last destination he encounters dark twists and turns as he must now try to survive the forest himself.

Reviews [click links to read more]:

“Torpedoed by self-conscious performances, this showcases a regrettably obnoxious array of characters and descends into repetitive, tedious scenes of torch-lit panic. When attempts to create atmosphere fail, it resorts to cheap nudge-nudge humour…” Horrorscreams Videovault

“Very little of it holds together or feels cohesive, it’s like a collection of improvised scenes randomly strung together. Which might not have been so bad if they were at least interesting. Unfortunately, in the worst tradition of found footage, ninety per cent of the film consists of people stumbling around the woods in the dark.” Voices from the Balcony

‘You can’t run. You can’t hide. Just die.’

The Goocher is a 2020 American horror feature film about a mythical female-shaped being that may be an extraterrestrial. When six strangers are left in the woods to fend for their lives, there’s one enemy they weren’t expecting.

Written and directed by William Lee (Black Mamba; 6 Feet Below Hell; Demons Rising; Soulripperz), the Cinema Lexzikon Productions movie stars Erin Perez, Megan Hall, Shirley Gerber, Carolyn L Seymour and Robert Lamar Burns.

Plot:

Who or what is The Goocher? The legend began as a Native American folk tale, warning of an evil spirit that never dies. Scientific research points to possible extraterrestrial origins, with unidentifiable energy-filled creatures inhabiting the deep forests of North America.

Most recently, conspiracy theorists state the phenomenon is no myth or alien, but rather a genetically advanced being created by a “dark” government group. Now, in the woods of Ohio, locals have reported sightings of a disfigured woman, angry and menacing, but unapproachable…the telltale sign of The Goocher. What is the horrific truth about this being?

Release:

In the USA, True Found released The Goocher on DVD on May 19th 2020.

Mesa of Lost Women (1953) reviews and free to watch online in 720p quality

Mesa of Lost Women is a 1953 American science fiction feature film directed by Ron Ormond (The Exotic Ones; Untamed Mistress) and Herbert Tevos from a screenplay by the latter and [uncredited] Orville H. Hampton (The Snake WomanThe Alligator People; The Four Skulls of Jonathan Drake). It was also released as Lost Women

The movie stars Jackie Coogan (The Prey; Doctor Heckyl and Mr. Hype; Human Experiments; Uncle Fester in The Addams Family TV show), Richard Travis, Allan Nixon and Lyle Talbot.

The project initially began as a Tarantula in 1952 directed by Herbert Tevos but the production ran out of funds. Ron Ormond took over and completed the movie.

The bizarre soundtrack score, which mainly consists of a Spanish guitar being strummed while a piano is pounded ominously, was composed by Hoyt Curtin who also wrote music for masses of animated series such as The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo and, most famously, The Flinstones theme.

Plot:

A couple is found wandering nearly dead in a desert. Recovering, they tell their story. A year previously, a mad scientist, Doctor Aranya (Jackie Coogan), has created giant spiders in his Mexican lab in Zarpa Mesa to create a race of superwomen by injecting spiders with human pituitary growth hormones. Women develop miraculous regenerative powers, however, men mutate into disfigured dwarves. Spiders grow to human size and intelligence. Aranya invites another scientist, Doctor Masterson, to join him. Masterson visits Zarpa but is horrified…

Reviews [click links to read more]:

“This is one of those films that’s fun to read about and tedious to watch. The story is more incoherent than non-linear, the characters are woodenly constructed, and the overall film is a dull, tepid mess.” All Movie

Mesa of Lost Women is too damn boring to be an Ed Wood film; it’s more like one by Coleman Francis (Beast of Yucca Flats … ) Instead of the sustained lunacy that we expect from The Master, for every moment of inspired idiocy here – and there are a few, thankfully – there are at least five minutes of uninteresting people wandering aimlessly around the desert, or sitting silently in a cantina. Mesa of Lost Women is bad, all right, but it is not one of The Great Bad Movies.” And You Call Yourself a Scientist!

“There’s a scary woman who’s supposed to be sexy. There’s a banal and underplayed mad scientist who’s supposed to be the star of the show. There’s a lunatic who manages to hold everyone under his power even though he spends most of the film dead on his feet. There’s a love triangle that springs out of nowhere and can go back there for all we care. There’s a nurse who only stops people disarming his mad murderer of a patient. There’s a giant jumping spider who manages to be boring.” Apocalypse Later

“The music is all flamenco (and later used by Ed Wood in one of his films) and ill-suited. The sets, the acting, the writing and especially the direction (by Ron Ormond) are all awful – and rather entertaining.” Down Among the “Z” Movies

“The storyline, the performances and simple narrative logic just don’t add up. The direction is incompetent in a decidedly Ed Wood style: The camera is never in a good position and every insert and cutaway is awkward, like the wrong puzzle piece forced into position. It looks as if it needed a wraparound flashback framework and an extended opening with vapid, non sequitur narration to come up to reasonable running time.” DVD Savant

“The story makes no sense, the performances are awful and after struggling through its many detours and longueurs for 70 minutes you’re rewarded with nothing of any value whatsoever. The likes of Plan 9 from Outer Space, Robot Monster (1953) and Fire Maidens from Outer Space (1956) may be technically shoddy but they always have enough about them to keep you engaged – often in disbelieve but engaged nonetheless. Mesa of Lost Women has nothing to offer at all.” The EOFFTV Review

“The movie features the most ingenious, congenial, courteous and well-mannered psycho in screen history. It’s a pity he isn’t scary. The movie pioneered a rarely-used cinematic technique; once everyone is stranded on the mesa, the action is enhanced by having close-ups of dwarves edited in at random. I think the technique is rarely-used for a very good reason.” Fantastic Movie Musings and Ramblings

” …if this was more accomplished then it would likely be unendurable, but seeing as how everyone involved was absolutely terrible it elevated the project to a level of compelling camp, from Lyle Talbot’s mocking narration to the catchphrase-filled dialogue.” The Spinning Image

“The story is your average science-fiction fare, but the script is horrible. The direction, the editing and cinematography is worse. The acting is probably the worst of it all and makes this film virtually unwatchable, not that the rest of what went in it did not already do that.” The Telltale Mind

“It’s a toss-up as to which is worse, the script or the direction. The eccentric guitar-piano score was reused by Edward D. Wood, Jr., in Jail Bait (1954).” TV Guide

“Pure 1950s B film schlock…but oh, so much fun. For a horror film with an epic cat-fight, and a plot of gritty reality, enjoy Mesa of Lost Women and ignore IMDb’s rating, as they only give this film a 2.1/10.” Zisi Emporium for B Movies

Verotika (2019) reviews and overview

Verotika is a 2019 American horror anthology feature film that compiles stories from writer-director Glenn Danzig’s comic books of the same name.

Written and directed by Glenn Danzig (Death Rider in the House of Vampires; founder of punk rock band Misfits), the movie stars Ashley Wisdom, Rachel Alig, Alice Tate and Kayden Kross. Danzig is also the film’s executive producer along with Brian Perera. James Cullen Bressack and Jarrett Furst are producers.

Plot:

The plot details are not being publicised but the anthology tale segments include “The Albino Spider of Dajette,” “Change of Face,” “Drukija Contessa of Blood,” and “Morella.”

Release:

Verotika premiered at the Cinepocalypse Film Festival in June 2019. The movie will be released by Cleopatra Entertainment as a Blu-ray + DVD + CD combo pack on February 24th and on Digital on February 25th 2020. Meanwhile, a DVD-only release is scheduled for March 3rd.

Review:

This makes Rob Zombie’s much-maligned, self-indulgent efforts of late seem positively worthwhile. Verotika has already been cited as a cinematic abomination beyond belief with some lazy reviewers citing the likes of oft-touted ‘worst’ films such as The Room and (yawn) Plan 9 from Outer Space. Hey, at least Ed D. Wood’s messy movie is fun, even on repeat viewings and there are 100s of awful films out there worth mentioning beyond the usual suspects. Unfortunately, Verotika is stilted and slow and even at just under 90 minutes is way too long to test anyone’s patience.

Performances are often painfully poor (especially during ‘The Albino Spider of Dajette’ portion where the would-be French accents would make Inspector Clouseau snigger), sets are cheap looking (despite a $1 million budget cited on IMDb), many shots are framed really awkwardly and the audio is echoey and all over the place. Almost every scene ends on a fade out which adds to the lack of cohesion.

Some of the cheesy gore effects are welcome and in the ‘Drukija Contessa of Blood’ segment they are amusingly OTT, yet they alone aren’t enough to redeem Verotika. Rather than shock us, as presumably Mr Danzig intended, he simply makes us wonder when his dire directorial debut will end. Stick to music, Glenn.

Adrian J Smith, MOVIES and MANIA

Other reviews:

“Every short suffers from Danzig idolizing extended shots, out-of-frame compositions, and zooms (in-and-out) with little forethought. Often, such errors come way of a first-time director feeling as though they must “direct.” That is, the more camera movement the better.” 812 Film Reviews

“It’s terrible beyond belief, even if you’ve prepared yourself ahead of time or are the most ardent fan in the world and are able to turn off your logic preceptors for an extended period of time. And yet, this is one of the most oddly beguiling movies to come out in sometime.” Boom Howdy

Verotika is undeniably bad, a collection of medium-shots and close-ups jumbled together in mysterious ways that are void of context, but if you get excited about, and are entertained by remarkably awkward, unskilled cinema, then this is one to seek out.” Film Pulse

Watch Happy Wax TV review on YouTube

Verotika is an unqualified failure on every dramatic level. The dialogue is clumsy, and it is clumsily spoken by obvious non-actors in scenes that drag out endlessly to the point of absurdity, with decidedly not-special special effects punctuating the non-action.” Horror 101 with Doctor AC

“Danzig claimed Verotika would be shocking. It isn’t, it’s very tame in terms of both sexual and violent content. Even if the effects were up to par, the violence is standard horror movie fare. There’s nothing overly shocking about what is depicted. The only thing shocking about Verotika is how inept it is.” Voices from the Balcony
